A £20 million company-funded investment in high-energy laser technology signals a significant step towards the operational deployment of Laser Directed Energy Weapons, with implications for UK sovereign industrial capability and the wider defence supply chain.
QinetiQ has announced a £20 million investment to accelerate the development and manufacture of Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) technology, expanding its product portfolio and production capacity across sites in Farnborough and Malvern. The announcement, made at Farnborough International Airshow, underlines a broader shift in the directed energy sector from long-term research and development towards active production and deployment at scale.
Central to the investment is the unveiling of HELENA, QinetiQ’s new brand for its coherent beam combination High Energy Laser Source products. These laser sources form the critical enabling component of any LDEW system, providing the capability to defeat drones and other advanced airborne threats with a low cost per shot and near-infinite magazine depth. As the proliferation of low-cost uncrewed systems continues to reshape the threat landscape, the economics of LDEW technology – offering a sustainable alternative to expensive interceptor missiles – are becoming increasingly compelling for defence customers across the UK and allied nations.
QinetiQ’s position in this market is well established. The company brings more than 25 years of directed energy experience and is a key member of the UK’s DragonFire consortium alongside MBDA and Leonardo, with LDEW systems contracted to deploy aboard Royal Navy ships from 2027. The £20 million investment builds directly on that foundation, significantly increasing production capacity and broadening the range of HELENA products available to both domestic and international customers.
Group CEO Steve Wadey described the shift from development to deployment as a change in battlefield economics, noting that QinetiQ’s investment is designed to ensure the company can meet growing demand from the UK and its allies. The move reflects a wider maturation of the directed energy sector, with technology that has been in development for decades now approaching the point of sustained operational use and export potential.
The expansion across Farnborough and Malvern will support and build on the 150 jobs currently sustained by QinetiQ’s LDEW activity, reinforcing the company’s role as a cornerstone of the UK’s sovereign capability in this high-value technology area.

QinetiQ’s investment marks a transition point for the UK directed energy sector that carries real implications for the wider supply chain. As LDEW technology moves from programme development into production and international market development, demand for specialist components, precision manufacturing, systems integration, testing and supply chain support will grow alongside it. Businesses with capabilities in photonics, optics, power electronics, thermal management, advanced materials and ruggedised systems engineering are increasingly well placed to explore opportunities as this capability area scales.
The DragonFire programme’s trajectory towards Royal Navy deployment in 2027 also signals a broader pipeline of integration, support and through-life sustainment work that will emerge as LDEW systems enter service across the armed forces.
