Optera, an Australian-origin neuromorphic sensing company, has relocated to the UK and raised £3m to establish its headquarters and engineering team here, backed by a consortium of defence and national security investors including the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF), UKI2S (managed by Future Planet Capital), Blackfinch Ventures, Foresight Group, and Empirical Ventures.

The company’s core technology addresses a genuine capability gap in space domain awareness (SDA). Its event-based sensors work on the same principle as the human eye, capturing only changes in a scene rather than continuous frames. The result is persistent tracking of fast-moving orbital objects at significantly lower data volumes and power consumption than conventional systems, with on-orbit heritage already in operation.

For the UK defence supply chain, the significance is twofold. First, Optera brings flight-proven neuromorphic sensing technology into a UK-sovereign, Five Eyes-aligned supply chain, reducing dependence on foreign-sourced components for a capability increasingly critical to the protection of national infrastructure in contested orbital environments. Second, the company is actively expanding its UK engineering team and looking for customers, partners, and universities to engage with as it scales.

The investment signals continued momentum behind the UK’s space and dual-use tech sector as a source of deployable defence capability. NSSIF’s Ed Phillips noted that the technology “promises to materially enhance the UK and its allies’ ability to protect critical national infrastructure in an increasingly congested and contested domain.” UKI2S Investment Director Alexander Leigh pointed directly to the Defence Industrial Strategy’s identification of space, AI, and autonomous systems as priority sectors for sovereign advantage.

Optera CEO Jonathon Wolfe was direct about the commercial offer: “Operators can track fast objects with higher confidence and at lower cost.” With on-orbit processing acceleration on the roadmap, more intelligence will be generated at the edge rather than transmitted to ground, reducing bandwidth requirements across the kill chain.

For supply chain primes and integrators working across space, surveillance, and dual-use sensing programmes, Optera represents an early-stage but flight-proven UK sovereign supplier worth engaging with now.
