Bristol-based Q5D Technologies has signed its first U.S. Army contract, partnering with American firm Molrix to deliver three automated wire harness manufacturing cells to the U.S. Army over the next 20 months. The deal marks a significant export milestone for a UK SME whose core technology is now being deployed at the heart of the U.S. military’s drone manufacturing scale-up programme.

The first system delivers in August 2026 in support of SkyFoundry, the Army’s initiative to accelerate small unmanned aerial systems production to a target capacity of 10,000 drones per month this year, scaling ultimately to around one million units annually. Two further systems follow in September for deployment at Tobyhanna Army Depot in Pennsylvania, where they will support manufacture and repair of complex wire harnesses for electronic systems, improving turnaround times for upgrades, overhaul, and depot-level maintenance.

Wire harness installation is one of the most labour-intensive and time-consuming stages of drone manufacture, a bottleneck that has become a strategic constraint as militaries scale production in response to Ukraine’s lessons. Q5D’s robotic systems automate the manufacture and installation of complex wire harnesses onto 3D structures, enabling agile production in environments where designs evolve rapidly and repair speed is critical.

For the UK defence supply chain, Q5D’s trajectory is instructive. The company has taken a capability developed for manufacturing automation and positioned it as a defence-critical enabler, securing a U.S. government contract through a local prime contractor partnership rather than attempting direct entry. That model, UK technology paired with an in-country integration partner, is a viable route for other UK advanced manufacturing firms looking at NATO allied markets.

The broader context reinforces the commercial opportunity. General Edward Daly, former Commanding General of U.S. Army Materiel Command, framed it directly: “Defence readiness is no longer just about stockpiling equipment; it also depends on having the manufacturing capability to sustain and modernise systems as operational demands evolve.”

Q5D CEO Stephen Bennington said the systems are “designed to help reduce manufacturing bottlenecks, improve repair turnaround times and support more scalable sustainment capability across rapidly evolving production environments.” With the UK’s own DroneTEX facility now open and UKDI actively investing in drone manufacturing scale-up, Q5D’s proven capability in the U.S. market also positions the company well for domestic defence opportunities.
