British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) has appointed Synamedia as its strategic technology partner to build a new global digital media platform for the UK Armed Forces, following a competitive international tender process launched in February 2025.

The three-year partnership will deliver what BFBS describes as the most significant technological transformation in its more than eight decades of operation – consolidating its broadcast and digital services into a single, secure platform, provisionally titled The Hub, designed to serve military personnel and their families across some of the world’s most challenging operating environments.

The announcement follows the Ministry of Defence renewing BFBS’ contract for a further ten years, providing the long-term certainty needed to underpin the scale of investment involved.

What The Hub Will Deliver

The new platform will be built and launched in phases, with an end-state experience comparable to leading commercial OTT streaming services – but engineered specifically for the security, connectivity and access requirements of a globally dispersed military audience. Key objectives include consolidating all BFBS services into a single streamlined experience, introducing new content formats beyond traditional broadcasting, and delivering personalised, secure access across multiple devices whether users are on ships, bases or in remote deployed locations.

Synamedia brings cloud-native streaming infrastructure, content delivery capability and secure distribution expertise to the programme – capabilities selected through a detailed technical evaluation process supported by digital transformation consultancy Spicy Mango.

A Significant Defence Digital Procurement

For the defence technology and digital services community, the BFBS selection process is a notable example of a military-adjacent organisation running a rigorous, internationally competitive procurement for a complex digital transformation programme. The process attracted leading technology and media organisations from across the industry before concluding with Synamedia’s appointment.

BFBS CEO Ben Chapman described the appointment as “a defining moment in the evolution of BFBS,” adding: “Our goal has always been to ensure the UK Armed Forces and their families can access trusted media experiences wherever they are. This partnership gives us the scale and technological function to deliver on that promise.”

Synamedia CEO Paul Segre said the project was well suited to the company’s capabilities: “BFBS has a bold vision and an innovative roadmap to make it a reality. Our cloud-native end-to-end technologies, streaming and content delivery capabilities, security expertise and professional services team are ideally suited to complex transformation projects just like this.”

The Broader Context

The BFBS platform transformation sits within a wider push across defence to modernise digital infrastructure and improve the experience of service personnel. Connectivity, access to information and the ability to stay in contact with family are all recognised as factors in recruitment, retention and welfare – making investment in platforms like The Hub a defence capability question as much as a technology one.

With the MoD’s ten-year contract renewal providing a stable funding horizon and Synamedia now appointed, the programme moves into delivery. Further procurement activity is likely as the phased build-out progresses and the supply chain around the platform takes shape.
